16-24s charities 246Facts & Figures: Young People and Charities

From a report by nfpSynergy

nfpSynergy have recently published a short research report 'Facts & Figures: Young People and Charities' which gives a quick overview of volunteering and charitable activities by 16-24 year olds in the UK.

Here are some key facts:

  • The proportion of young people in the UK is shrinking: 19% of the UK population is currently under 16 (down from 22% in 1981), and 11% is 16 - 24 (down from 14% in 1981).
  • 44% of 16 - 24 year olds were in full-time education in 2016, a significant increase from 26% in 1992.
  • Young people are volunteering more and more, and 16-24s and over 65s are most likely to give up their time.
  • 16 - 24s are the least likely to have donated in the last 3 months; 64% had not donated compared to 68% of the rest of the public.
  • A third of under 18s had donated in the last month, compared with 55% of adults.

The proportion of 16 - 24s volunteering has doubled from 17% in 2008 to 33% in 2016 but it is volatile. This compares to about 20% of the population as a whole.

Obviously, 16-24s have a smaller disposable income than other age groups but as you can see they are very open to volunteering - especially those in higher education.

How can churches harness this altruism and energy? This may not be about keeping established programmes going. Are you providing the right opportunities for this age group? Young people may not be associated with church but they may want to volunteer for something worthwhile.
